Bespoke Jewellery Commission Terms & Conditions

Last Updated: 01/06/2026

At The Jewellery Appraiser, every bespoke commission is individually designed and created specifically for each client. Because each piece is custom-made to your requirements, bespoke commissions are subject to the following additional Terms and Conditions.

By proceeding with a bespoke jewellery commission, you agree to the terms outlined below.

What Is A Bespoke Commission?

A bespoke commission is any item of jewellery that is designed, modified, personalised, remodelled or manufactured specifically to a client's individual requirements.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Bespoke engagement rings

  • Wedding rings

  • Memorial jewellery

  • Jewellery remodelling projects

  • Custom gemstone jewellery

  • Jewellery incorporating client-supplied gemstones or precious metals

  • Special-order gemstones and diamonds

  • Personalised jewellery

Design Consultation

The bespoke process typically begins with a consultation to discuss:

  • Design ideas

  • Gemstone preferences

  • Metal choices

  • Budget requirements

  • Timescales

Quotations are based upon information available at the time and may be subject to amendment should design specifications change during the project.

Deposits

A deposit is required before work can commence on any bespoke commission.

The deposit secures your project and allows us to begin work, which may include:

  • Sourcing gemstones or diamonds

  • Purchasing precious metals

  • Commissioning CAD design work

  • Creating wax models

  • Engaging specialist craftspeople

  • Commissioning lapidary services

  • Manufacturing components

Deposits Are Non-Refundable

All deposits paid towards bespoke commissions are strictly non-refundable.

This is because costs are often incurred immediately upon commencement of the project, regardless of whether the commission proceeds to completion.

These costs may include, but are not limited to:

  • CAD design fees

  • Gemstone sourcing costs

  • Precious metal purchases

  • Manufacturing costs

  • Lapidary work

  • Specialist subcontractor fees

By paying a deposit, you acknowledge and agree that these costs are incurred specifically on your behalf.

Design Approval

Clients will be provided with design concepts, sketches, CAD renders or other visual representations where appropriate.

It is the client's responsibility to carefully review and approve all designs before manufacture begins.

Approval of a design confirms acceptance of:

  • Overall design

  • Dimensions

  • Stone placement

  • Metal choice

  • Finish

  • Engraving details

Once final approval has been provided and production has commenced, significant design changes may not be possible and additional charges may apply.

Cancellation Of Bespoke Orders

Under UK consumer legislation, bespoke and personalised items are generally exempt from cancellation rights that apply to standard online purchases.

As each commission is made specifically for an individual client, bespoke orders cannot be cancelled once production has commenced.

Should a client choose not to proceed after work has begun, any monies already paid will be retained to cover costs incurred.

If manufacturing costs exceed the deposit paid, additional charges may remain payable.

Client-Supplied Jewellery, Gemstones & Materials

We are happy to incorporate client-supplied gemstones, diamonds and precious metals into bespoke commissions where suitable.

However, clients acknowledge that:

  • Older gemstones and jewellery may contain existing damage not visible during initial inspection.

  • Certain gemstones may be vulnerable during removal, resetting or manufacturing processes.

  • Previously worn jewellery may contain metal fatigue or hidden weaknesses.

Whilst every care is taken, The Jewellery Appraiser cannot accept liability for unforeseen issues arising from the age, condition or previous treatment of client-supplied materials.

Any risks identified prior to commencement will be discussed with the client.

Gemstone & Diamond Sourcing

Where gemstones or diamonds are sourced specifically for a commission:

  • Availability may vary.

  • Prices may fluctuate due to market conditions.

  • Alternative stones may be suggested if originally selected materials become unavailable.

Natural gemstones may contain inclusions and unique characteristics that form part of their individual beauty and identity.

No two gemstones are identical.

Timescales

Estimated completion times are provided as guidance only.

While every effort is made to meet agreed timescales, delays may occasionally occur due to:

  • Supplier availability

  • Gemstone sourcing

  • Manufacturing schedules

  • Assay office requirements

  • Circumstances beyond our control

We will keep clients informed of any significant delays.

Hallmarking

Where required by UK law, commissioned jewellery will be submitted for hallmarking through an approved UK Assay Office.

This process may affect completion times.

Collection & Final Payment

Full payment must be received prior to collection or dispatch of any bespoke commission.

Ownership of the finished item remains with The Jewellery Appraiser until payment has been received in full.

Variations In Handmade Jewellery

Bespoke jewellery is handcrafted and individual by nature.

Minor variations may occur between:

  • CAD renders

  • Design sketches

  • Wax models

  • Finished pieces

Such variations are considered normal characteristics of handcrafted jewellery and do not constitute faults.

Aftercare & Maintenance

All jewellery experiences wear through everyday use.

We recommend:

  • Regular cleaning

  • Annual inspections

  • Professional maintenance when required

  • Updating Jewellery Valuations periodically for insurance purposes

Failure to follow appropriate aftercare recommendations may affect the longevity of the piece.  Please see our section below on further aftercare advice.

Warranty

Should any manufacturing fault become apparent, please contact us as soon as possible.

This does not cover:

  • Accidental damage

  • Loss of stones due to impact

  • Wear and tear

  • Improper use

  • Alterations carried out by third parties

  • Damage caused by chemicals or misuse

Each case will be assessed individually.

Our Commitment

Every bespoke commission is created with care, skill and attention to detail.

Our aim is to create jewellery that is both beautiful and meaningful, while ensuring clients fully understand the bespoke process from initial consultation through to completion.

If you have any questions regarding these Terms & Conditions, please contact The Jewellery Appraiser before placing your commission.

Jewellery Aftercare Guide

Caring For Your Jewellery

Fine jewellery is designed to be worn and enjoyed, but regular care and maintenance will help keep your pieces looking their very best for years to come.

Whether you've purchased a bespoke commission, engagement ring, memorial jewellery piece or gemstone jewellery, following these simple aftercare guidelines will help preserve its beauty and longevity.

Daily Wear

Although jewellery is designed for everyday enjoyment, we recommend removing jewellery before:

  • Gardening

  • Heavy lifting

  • DIY projects

  • Contact sports

  • Swimming

  • Using cleaning chemicals

  • Applying lotions, perfumes or hairspray

Chemicals and physical impact can damage gemstones, weaken settings and cause premature wear.

Cleaning Your Jewellery

Regular cleaning helps maintain sparkle and remove everyday dirt and oils.

Gold & Platinum Jewellery

Clean using:

  • Warm water

  • Mild washing-up liquid

  • A soft toothbrush

  • A lint-free cloth

Gently brush around settings and underneath gemstones before rinsing thoroughly and drying.

Diamond Jewellery

Diamonds attract grease and oils which can reduce their brilliance.

Regular gentle cleaning will help maintain their sparkle.

Gemstone Jewellery

Certain gemstones require extra care.

Avoid harsh cleaning products, ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaning unless specifically advised by a professional jeweller.

Some gemstones such as opals, emeralds, pearls and memorial resin jewellery require special handling.

Memorial Jewellery Care

Memorial jewellery containing resin should be treated with additional care.

We recommend:

  • Avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

  • Avoiding harsh chemicals and cleaning products.

  • Removing jewellery before swimming or bathing.

  • Storing separately when not being worn.

Resin can naturally age over time and should be treated gently to preserve its appearance.

Storing Your Jewellery

When not being worn, jewellery should be stored:

  • In a jewellery box or pouch.

  • Separately from other jewellery.

  • In a dry environment.

  • Away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

Storing jewellery separately helps prevent scratching and tangling.

Regular Inspections

We recommend having valuable jewellery professionally inspected at least once every 12 months.

This allows us to check:

  • Stone security

  • Claw wear

  • Chain wear

  • Clasps and fittings

  • General condition

Regular inspections can help prevent the loss of gemstones and identify potential issues before they become costly repairs.

Insurance & Valuations

Many clients are unaware that jewellery values can change significantly over time.

To ensure your jewellery remains adequately insured, we recommend reviewing your Jewellery Valuation every 2–3 years, or sooner if there have been significant changes in precious metal or gemstone prices.

Jewellery Repairs

If your jewellery becomes damaged, loose, bent or worn, we recommend seeking professional advice promptly.

Continuing to wear damaged jewellery may increase the risk of further damage or gemstone loss.

We offer a comprehensive jewellery repair service, including:

  • Ring resizing

  • Chain repairs

  • Claw re-tipping

  • Gemstone replacement

  • Polishing and refurbishment

  • Restoration of antique and heirloom jewellery
